Hooray For Earth is a New York City-based rock band that originated from home recordings that were created by singer and multi-instrumentalist Noel Heroux.  The band materialized in 2005 when Heroux and the band’s bassist, Chris Principe, met and played in various projects throughout high school before forming Hooray For Earth.  While Heroux and Principe were living in Boston, Heroux worked diligently on home recordings of his songs, many of which became some of Hooray For Earth’s first tunes.

The band later recruited drummer Seth Kasper and keyboardist/guitarist Gary Benacquista before releasing a self-titled demo and playing gigs all around Boston before relocating to New York City in 2007.  The demo highlighted the band’s unique blend of high-power rock and synthesizer tones, which soon caught the ear of Dopamine Records who signed Hooray For Earth and released their debut EP, “Cellphone,” in early 2008.  The record later re-released the band’s demo as an official album in 2009.  That same year, Kasper left the group and was replaced by a new drummer, Joseph Ciampini.

A second EP, “Momo,” was released by online subscription service eMusic Selects and was later released physically by Dovecote Records in 2010.  All of this lead up to the band’s first proper recording of their full-length album, “True Loves,” in 2010.  The album was constructed, produced, and performed mostly by Heroux, with other bandmembers and collaborators like Zambri and mixing engineer Chris Coady contributing in various ways.  The album was released in June of 2011 and was followed up by the band’s second full-length album, “Racy,” in 2014.

If the band’s sound could be described in a few words, it would be “atmospheric” and “sound blending.”  Every track these guys produce is meant to make you feel calm and at peace.  The sounds drift through your ears and seem to want to whisp you away to another world.  Their songs continually have build-ups and falls and the band is not afraid to experiment with their own formula.  It definitely makes for an interesting listening experience and makes the band one that has to be experienced in order to understand.

Check out some of the band’s biggest hits below and if you like what you hear, check out the band’s two albums, “True Love” and “Racy” which are both out now in stores and on Itunes.

Matt and Kim

Matt and Kim are an American indie dance duo from Brooklyn, New York that consists of keyboardist/vocalist Matt Johnson and drummer Kim Schifino.

The two came together in 2004 while attending the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, and sessions for their debut album began two years later after a spring tour with “Meneguar.”  Featuring vocals from both members, the self-titled album was released by the I Heart Comix label in fall 2006.  Shortly after, the duo performed at multiple festivals throughout 2007 including Lollapalooza and the Siren Music Festival.

The group continued to tour for a couple more years after until they briefly took a break to record more material for their sophomore album, “Grand,” which was released in early 2009 on their new label Fader and cracked the Billboard 200 at number 165.

The album, “Sidewalks,” followed a year later and, thanks to the help of a video that saw the duo strip down to their birthday suits in the streets of New York City, charted much higher on the Billboard Charts to 30.

The groups fourth album, “Lightning,” was self-produced by the duo and was released in November 2012.  A year later, the duo released an album of remixes from “Lightning,” titled, “Lightning Remixes.”

On January 13, 2015, the group released the single “Get It” off of their upcoming album “New Glow” which is slated to be released on April 7, 2015.  The new single, received mixed reviews from fans because it moves away from Matt and Kim’s DIY style of sound.

I personally enjoyed the new single and welcome Matt and Kim’s continued musical experimentation.  Matt and Kim started off in relative obscurity and through the years, have worked hard to garner immense popularity.  Many times, they are the driving force for festivals simply because they will be performing there.  I have also heard that their live shows are not something to miss.

Give Matt and Kim a listen below and see why this duo has become a dominant force within the indie music scene.
