Betty Who

Jessica Anne Newham, better known by her stage name, Betty Who, is an Australian singer/songwriter and musician based out of New York City.  With a sound similar to fellow divas, Whitney Houston, Robyn, and Katy Perry, Newham has a sound that is inevitably going to hit every radio station across the country.

Newham was born in Sydney, Australia and began playing the cello, piano, and guitar as a child.  She moved to America with her parents when she was a teenager to attend the Interlochen Center for the Arts performing arts school.  She then went to the Berklee College of Music for more training as a cellist, but really wanted to focus more on being a singer/songwriter.  She began performing her own songs by the age of 16.

While at Berklee, she met producer Peter Thomas and the pair began writing and recording material together.  Newham says that she draws a lot of her inspiration from the songwriting skills of Joni Mitchell and Carole King and her synth-pop sound from M83 and MGMT.  She says that they were hoping to capture a sound that was both nostalgic and contemporary such as on their single “Somebody Loves You,” which Newham wrote shortly after Whitney Houston’s death.  The song became the first single off of Newham’s self-released debut EP, “The Movement,” which was released in April 2013.
