Here’s a girl that has a bright future ahead of her.  With a successful debut album that she created at only 15 years old, Birdy is a singer full of potential.

Jasmine van den Bogaerde, commonly known by her stage name Birdy, is an English musician, singer and songwriter.  She won the music competition Open Mic UK in 2008, at the age of 12.  Her debut single, her cover of Bon Iver’s “Skinny Love,” was her breakthrough hit, charting all across Europe and has been certified six times platinum in Australia.  Her self-titled debut album, “Birdy,” was released on November 7, 2011 and had similar success, peaking at number 1 in Australia, Belgium and the Netherlands.  Her second studio album, “Fire Within,” was released September 23, 2013 in the UK and other surrounding countries.

Birdy was born May 15, 1996, in Lymington, Hampshire.  Her mother is a concert pianist and taught Birdy to play the piano at age seven.  Birdy soon began to write her own music by the age of eight.  Birdy has studied at Brockenhurst College in Brockenhurst, a sixth form college in the New Forest area, as of 2013.  Her stage name comes from a nickname her parents gave her as a baby because she would open her mouth like a little bird when fed.

In 2008, she won the UK talent contest Open Mic Uk, at 12 years old.  She won both the under-18’s category and the Grand Prize, against 10,000 other competitors.  She performed her own song at the competition called “So Be Free” in front of 2,000 people.  Birdy reminisced in an interview with BBC Radio 1 about the open mic competition grand final saying it was “such a cool experience.  When I performed, I had this connection with the audience that I’d never felt before, and I loved it.  It was my first big thing, and looking out into the crowd … was just amazing.”

Her self-titled debut album, “Birdy,” was released November 7, 2011, the album peaked at number 13 in the UK, number 40 in Ireland and number one in Belgium, the Netherlands and Australia.  On December 21, 2011, Birdy received a Golden Single from 3FM during serious requests in the Netherlands for selling more than 25,000 copies.  A day later, she received a Golden Single from Studio Brussel during Music For Life in Belgium for selling more than 15,000 copies.  In August 2012, “Birdy” peaked at number one in Australia, while the singles “Skinny Love” and “People Help the People” peaking at 2 and 10 respectively.

Birdy’s second album, “Fire Within,” was released in the UK on September 23, 2013 and has received mostly positive reviews.  The album will be released in the U.S. sometime in 2014.  Birdy released three singles from the album, “Wings,” “No Angels” and “All You Never Say.”  “All You Never Say” was sent to subscribers of Birdy’s mailing list and posted on YouTube on August 15, 2013.

Birdy has a very soft, intimate, often delicate sounding voice that is capable of great range.  Often her covers of songs have a much more slow going, easy listening sound to them and Birdies vocals are often whispered, yet she is capable of hitting high notes too.  She has great singing talent and it’s made even more impressive by the fact that her most successful album, “Birdy,” was recorded when she was only 15 years old.  She’s go a lot of potential and I feel that it is only a matter of time until she’s catapulted into mainstream success here in the U.S., much like fellow singer/songwriter, “Lorde.”

Check out some of her biggest hits below and keep an eye out for the U.S.release of her second album, “Fire Within.”
