CHVRCHES (pronounced “Churches”) are a Scottish Synthpop band from Glasgow that formed in 2011.  The group is made up of Lauren Mayberry (lead vocals, additional synthesizers and samplers), Lain Cook (synthesizers, guitar, bass, vocals), and Martin Doherty (synthesizers, samplers, and vocals).

CHVRCHES came fifth on the BBC’s Sound of 2013 list of the most promising new musical talent.  In March 2013, they released their EP “Recover” and by September 20, 2013, they released their debut album “The Bones of What You Believe.”

Before CHVRCHES, Lain Cook was a member of “Aereogramme” and the “Unwinding Hours.”  He also wrote music for film and TV.  Martin Doherty was a live member of “The Twilight Sad.”  According to Mayberry “Lain and Martin went to the same university together so they’ve known each other for quite a long time.”

Mayberry completed a four-year law degree followed by a Masters in Journalism.  This lead her to a a career in freelance journalism for several years prior to her music career.  She’d played piano since she was a kid and drums ever since she was a teenager.  From age 15 to 22, she played drums in various bands.  Before joining CHVRCHES, she was a member of two local bands, “Boyfriend/Girlfriend” and “Blue Sky Archives.”  In “Blue Sky Archives,” she was the lead vocalist, keyboardist and drummer.

Cook was helping produce an EP for Mayberry’s “Blue Sky Archives” when he asked Mayberry to sing on a couple of demos for a new project he had started.  They wrote together for several months in a basement in Glasgow and each member decided to form a band when their basement sessions turned out to be a success.  They chose the name “CHVRCHES” using a Roman “v” to avoid confusion with actual churches on internet searches.  They also noted that the band name “has no religious connotations, they just thought it sounded cool.”

On November 5, 2012, the band debuted their first official single “The Mother We Share.”  In June 2012, “The Guardian” featured CHVRCHES as one of the “New Bands of the Day.”  On July 5, 2012, the band performed their first debut gig at The Artschool Glasgow, Scotland.

In mid-January 2013, it was announced that CHVRCHES signed with the independent label Glassnote Records.  On September 20, 2013, the band released their debut studio album “The Bones of What You Believe” on Virgin Records.  The album received positive reviews through the aggregator website Metacritic with a score of 80 out of 100 based on 36 reviews from critics.  Reed Fischer of Alternate Press wrote, “the heartbreaking and indignation in Lauren Mayberry’s laser-precise voice makes her an imperfect protagonist in the song length dramas found throughout her bands debut.”  Rolling Stone’s list of the 50 best albums of 2013 put “The Bones of What You Believe” at number 32.

CHVRCHES sound has usually been described as electronic or Synthpop.  Neon Gold (a music blog) has described their sound as “a godless hurricane of kinetic pop energy.”  Kitty Empire of the Observer wrote “they make accessible electro-pop that’s only just short of truly brilliant.”

These guys are a great electro-pop outfit and have already found great success off of their first debut album.  Hopefully they can continue to innovate and improve on their sound for their next album.  Keep an eye out for these guys because they will be big someday.  Until then, enjoy the hits off of their fantastic first album “Bones of What You Believe” below.
