Image“Capital Cities” is an American indie pop duo from Los Angeles, California, formed by Ryan Merchant and Sebu Simonian.  Their debut EP was released on June 7, 2011, with their lead single “Safe and Sound”.  Their second single, “Kangaroo Court”, was released on May 1, 2012.  The band was also featured on the Pop Up #1 compilation created by Perez Hilton that was released on August 7, 2012.

The band’s song “Safe and Sound” charted at #1 on the US Alternative Songs chart.  The song was featured in a German Vodafone commercial; Vodafone being the worlds second-largest mobile telecommunications company.  Their song “Center Stage” was featured on ESPN’s First Take where they played a short segment of the retro sounding track before going to commercial break.

The bands debut album, “In a Tidal Wave of Mystery” was released June 4, 2013, via Capital Records and was in a partner ship with fellow record company “Lazy Hooks”.  The album debuted at #66 on the Billboard 200 album chart.

Merchant first met Simonian on Craigslist after he responded to the others open ad offering his production services.  The pair soon began to write jingles together and after a successful three years together composing music for commercials and advertisement campaigns, the pair formed “Capital Cities”.

On June 4, 2013, the band released its debut album “In a Tidal Wave of Mystery.”  The album takes its name from the lyrics in their hit single  “Safe and Sound” which was the first single off of the album.  The entire album was produced and mixed by Merchant and Simonian.  The album art was produced by Brazilian artist Joao Lauro Fonte.

The band embarked on their first-ever North American outing, the “Dancing With Strangers” tour with special guests “Gold Fields”, which kicked off on April 23 at the Crescent Ballroom in Phoenix, Arizona.

The band premiered the official video of “Safe and Sound” on April 25, 2013 on VEVO.  The video was directed by Grady Hall who is known for his music videos with fellow musicians “Beck” and “Modest Mouse”.  The video featured a mash-up of the past 100 years of dance.  The video featured work from Emmy-nominated choreographer Mandy Moore.  The video was nominated for two 2013 MTV Video Music Awards: Best Art Direction and won Best Visual Effects.

So far, “Capital Cities” has been very successful and hopefully they will continue to produced great albums.  If you haven’t listened to “In a Tidal Wave of Mystery” yet, I highly recommend it.  Listen to their huge single “Safe and Sound” below and a few of their other hits as well.
