ImageHere is a band that’s making waves and starting to become very popular.

“Twenty One Pilots” is an American music duo from Columbus, Ohio.  The band was formed in 2009 by Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun.  They put out two self-released albums, “Twenty One Pilots” in 2009 and “Regional at Best” in 2011, before being signed to the record company “Fueled by Ramen” in 2012.  They released their first full-length album, “Vessel”, in 2013.

The band was formed in Columbus, Ohio by three college friends, Tyler Joseph, Nick Thomas and Chris Salih.  Joseph came up with the bands name while studying “All My Sons” by Arthur Miller, a play about a man who commits suicide after causing the death of twenty one pilots during World War II because he knowingly sent them faulty parts for the good of his business.  Joseph explains that this story of moral dilemma was the inspiration for the name of the band.  On December 29, 2009, they released their debut, self-titled album and began touring Ohio.  Thomas and Salih left the band due to busy schedules and Joseph was joined by Josh Dun.

Their second self-release, “Regional at Best” was released July 8, 2011, accompanied by a free CD release show on the grounds of New Albany High School.  In November 2011, they played a sold out show at Columbus’ Newport Music Hall which attracted the attention of dozens of record labels.

In April 2012, at a sold out show at the Lifestyles Community Pavilion, they announced their signing to Atlantic Records subsidiary label “Fueled by Ramen”.  On July 17, 2012, they released three songs off of their upcoming “Fueled by Ramen” album.  In August 2012, they did a short tour with “Neon Trees”, and “Walk the Moon”. On January 8, 2013, “Vessel” was released and reached 58 on the Billboard 200, 42 on the Digital Albums chart, 17 on the Internet Albums chart, 15 on the Rock Albums chart and 10 on the Alternative Albums chart.

They currently have their first radio hit in America, “Holding on to You”, which has reached 11 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart.  Also, the songs “Guns for Hands” and “Lovely” reached 21 and 67, respectively on the Japan Hot 100.

In May, Fall Out Boy announced that Twenty One Pilots will be touring as an opening act on the “Save Rock and Roll” arena tour this Fall.

On August 8, 2013, Twenty One Pilots also performed their song “House of Gold” on Conan as their first late night debut.

The band has a very unique style to their music.  They blend rap, folk, pop, indie, and electronic music all together, giving them a sound that is as unique as it is varied. On the album “Vessel”, the songs tend to jump around, going from quick, precise raping, to slow, poppy, folk.  It is this variety that makes them both interesting and able to attract a much wider genre of fans.

Of all of their songs, my favorite one is “Guns for Hands”.
