One of my favorite bands that I have been wanting to put on here for a while. Volbeat is a Danish metal band from Copenhagen. They play a fusion of rock and roll, heavy metal, schlager (which is another name for easy-listening love ballads), and rockabilly. They say that they get their inspiration from classic rock and roll artists such as Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash, as well as a great number of modern hard rock, groove metal, alternative rock, and hardcore groups.

The band began back in 2000 when lead singer Michael Poulsen became fed up with the death metal scene and broke up his band “Dominus.” In 2001, he brought together a few of his friends and a few former members of “Dominus.” They started to write some music and from there Volbeat was born.

The band says that the name “Volbeat” comes from Dominus’s third album which was titled Vol.Beat (read as: Volume Beat).

The band has released 5 albums since 2001 and all of their albums have been certified gold in Denmark. Their second album, “Rock the Rebel/Metal the Devil” received platinum status and their 2010 release “Beyond Hell/Above Heaven” was subject to widespread international critical acclaim. receiving double platinum in Denmark, platinum in Finland and Germany, and gold in Sweden and Austria.

On April 9, 2013, Volbeat released their fifth studio album “Outlaw Gentlemen & Shady Ladies.” On this album, Volbeat also had Rob Caggiano, formerly of Anthrax, join the band as their new secondary guitarist which, in my opinion, helped to give the band a more traditional rock feel with Robs dynamic guitar solos and rhythms. Poulsen spoke about the chemistry of Caggiano joining the band. “The collaberation with Rob in the studio was so inspiring and in good spirit that we decided to keep him. Basically we went into the studio as a three-piece and came out a whole band!”

The band has also received a great amount of rewards. Their album “The Strength/The Sound/The Songs” won the award for the best debut album at the Danish Metal Music Awards in 2005. They also won the award “Steppeulven” for Hope of the Year 2006. They also won the award for “Best Live Band” at the Danish Metal Music Awards 2006 which was voted on by fans. “Rock the Rebel/Metal the Devil” won best album at the Danish Metal Music Awards 2007. They also won the Danish Radio Award for P3 listener hit at the P3 Guld-Show voted by listeners of P3.

Volbeat truly is an interesting band and the newest sound to come out of heavy metal music in a while. With their blend of the old west sounds, guitar solos, and Poulsen’s very distinct voice, they all blend together to give you a new kind of heavy metal that I’m sure most of you haven’t heard before. That is why they are one of my favorite bands and why I can listen to them over and over again.

It is to hard to for me to pick a favorite song from this band, so I’ll leave as many songs as I can get for you so you can see what I’m talking about.
